“You’re the only Hawkty I see”

Round two of midterms are coming up. I honestly am not worried at all because I think I have this whole college thing figured out. Well, at least for the meantime.

This past week was pretty negative. I had so many noodle days. These are days where I don’t feel like doing anything, which wasn’t so good because I had quite a bit of assignments due. Luckily I still managed to get them done on time. I felt like a superhero saving the day with a five-page essay.

I want to talk about procrastination this week. It is a skill, that if mastered correctly, will still not work in your favor. I should know. Sure laying in bed with nice cup of coffee sounds nice, but being productive on work is something better. Netflix and season five of Pretty Little Liars won’t get your essay done.

Some ways to avoid getting distracted from technology is simple. Turn it off! Although this may not be easy for some, it is the main thing that causes distractions. Once you finish a paragraph of your essay, reward yourself with checking one notification. If you’re the type of person that likes food, reward yourself with a snack instead. Learning to lessen the urge to procrastinate will help everyone in the long run. I honestly wish procrastination never existed.

ericAnother topic I would like to touch on this week is friends. Many of us are really comfortable with the people we hang out with. Socializing with new people and hanging out with them gives you a better perspective on the types of people at UHCL. There are so many people to meet and not everyone is the same. One of my New Year’s resolution goals was to meet over half of the entire school by the end of the year. I know this is probably a difficult goal, but, hey, we all have to set our standards high. Some really simple conversations starters are:

“Are you as stressed as I am?”

“Hi, I’m about to have a mental breakdown from school, what about you?” or the classic “Are you from UHCL because you’re the only Hawkty I see.”

Whether these work or not, at least you tried and they would see your effort and then maybe end up becoming best friends forever with you. These are just some simple ways to enjoy the college life.

That’s it for this week Hawks, and remember study and meet new friends. I challenge each one of you to make at least one new friend by the end of this week. Good luck!

Being a Hawk is the best thing I could have done right in life.

ericWell, turkey break is over and it’s time to go back to reality. Time to face our finals and start studying hardcore. That turkey break wasn’t enough for me mostly because I procrastinated the whole week. Just when I thought I had gotten better at avoiding procrastinating too. Even though I didn’t get any work done during the break, I did get to reunite with my family. Family that I have not seen in many years showed up on Thanksgiving Day. It was amazing to see how happy everyone was. I did not get a full week of vacation like I used to in high school, but I don’t really mind since the semester is almost over. I still cannot believe that in one week classes are done.

This will be my last blog for the semester, Hawks. It’s a sad day, USA. It’s pretty insane how fast time flies. I have noticed that as I grow older time starts to go by faster. I hate time. I wish I could savor each moment of my life longer. I feel as if the semester has just started and now it’s almost over. I can still remember being in fifth grade. That was one of the best years of my life because I got my first girlfriend. Well, if you count sharing fruit snacks and holding hands for two days. Sounds like kindergarten love. I don’t want to grow up anymore.

College is hard and it’s only going to get harder, which is why I have to strive for the best. Being a first generation college student is really hard, and unfortunately my family hardly shows support. They don’t know how big of a deal it is to be a college student. They showed support the first couple of days when I got accepted into college but other than that not much. I really do need encouragement to keep going. Family is what keeps us fueled. Other than that my semester at UHCL has been outstanding. All the new people I met and all the wonderful activities I enjoyed were wonderful. Being a Hawk is the best thing I could have done right in life. I will never forget all the experiences I am experiencing at UHCL. They are some of the best in my life. I’m kept busy all the time and that’s a good thing. It keeps me from watching TV shows on Netflix. Finals are around the corner and I should stop distracting myself from studying.

Well, that’s it for this week, Hawks. Hope you all are studying because finals are coming up and they really know how to throw a punch. So get your gloves ready to challenge finals. Study, study, study! And don’t forget to catch up on sleep!
