Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

My First Day of College

I know this may sound funny, but when I was walking into the Bayou Building the first day I felt myself trying to hold back a tear. Not because I was scared or because I’m an emotional person, but because I realized today is the first day to the rest of my life.

My whole summer I was talking about how I can’t wait to be successful, but August 25 was the day where it was time to put all those words into action. Now or never I kept telling myself. “Are you ready to make this world your game? There aren’t second chances. It’s time to get it!” I had no problem finding my classes, because I made sure I knew where they all were the week prior.

When I walked in to my first Learning Frameworks class at 8 a.m, Robin Aleman greeted me, the most energetic and positive person I’ve met so far at UHCL. I never expect people to remember my name, but she knew who I was and that made me feel grateful, because I knew exactly who she was. I’m not exactly sure of all the names of the four individuals that came in the class that morning to greet us, but I do remember Dr. Darlene Biggers. They began to express how excited they were to have us freshman on campus and emphasized the fact we were the first freshman class taking the first class of the year. It made me smile that they took time out of their days to tell us hello. They didn’t have to do that, but they did. I was grateful for that.

Hawk Leadership Institute

During orientation in June I heard of an amazing opportunity to join HLI and commit to at least a year of Leadership Exploration. I applied and was interviewed by Jeremy Mejia and two weeks later I was glad to know I had been abiancaccepted into the program. There are 17 freshmen in this group and we all have the same goal. The goal to be successful leaders and let our voice be heard. With this program we will find out our leadership styles and our success coaches will help mold us into the true leaders we are. I am so excited to be a part of this program. On Saturday, August 30, I attended the HLI Leadership Retreat and it was very informative. We discussed which traits we believe a true leader has and put our imagination to work when we looked into our future and wrote down what kind of leaders we will be and the risks that come along with it. My favorite part of the day was when we had to write our top three values on note cards, list why those were our values, then shared our values with the whole group. My top three values were Empathy, Growth, and Spirituality.

College Tips to Success

  • Find a study environment.

Coffee shops, libraries, or outside by the beautiful nature that surrounds our campus. Find which environment is most suitable. The amount of time you put in class is the amount of time you should put in outside of class, this is sad but TRUE!

  • Use Your Resources!

In case you didn’t know we have a Writing Center….

And a Math Center….

Utilize your resources. We all pay for them in our tuition fees!

College is the time to interact and step out of your comfort zone. Build friendships with peers, professors, and staff. Sometimes it’s not about what you know, but about WHO you know.
  • Prioritize

List what needs to be done and get it done. Then list what assignments you can hold off for another day, but be sure to complete them in a timely manner.
